Chipiona is found on the Atlantic coast of Spain, in the province of Cadiz, about 50 kms away from the famous city. It’s a small town of just under 19,000 inhabitants but its numbers swell greatly during the high tourist season (the summer). Most tourists are Spaniards, but international holidaymakers are gradually cottoning on to this well-kept secret.

The town area was known to have been settled by the Romans as early as the second century BC and has always been an important location for lighthouses warning of the mouth of the Guadalquivir River. Today the old seafaring town is a popular resort with some great beaches and interesting sights and a vibrant gastronomic scene.

  • The Beaches: Known as the Costa de la Luz, Chipiona’s coastline runs for 7 kms and is home to some beautiful beaches. Cruz del Mar aka Playa del Muelle sits next to the port and can get busy but boasts beautiful views. Las Canteras is a blue flag beach with two large old tidal fishing pools. De Regla is one of the quieter beaches but still has excellent facilities. Tres Piedras is a great location for all sorts of beach sports.
  • The Countryside: The fertile plain around the town is ideal for growing Muscatel grapes and some of the vineyards are open to visitors. Chipiona is also Spain’s largest producer of carnations.

What to see and do in Chipiona

The wealth of beaches means there is also plenty of fun things to do in the sunshine and in/on the water but the small town of Chipiona also has some fascinating sites to visit. The Chipiona Lighthouse is the tallest in Spain and the third tallest in Europe. The ancient castle fortress is now a monastery and is home to the Shrine of our Lady of Regla. Chipiona Castle was built in 1295 and houses a museum. Nuestra Senora de la O Parish from the 16th century contains sculptures and art and also a fountain with spa waters enjoyed by the locals.


What to eat in Chipiona

Seafood is naturally popular, and it is said that the finest lobsters in Spain are found in Chipiona. The area also produces great prawns and huge white claw crabs, along with excellent tomatoes. Dishes to look for are merluza en salsa de moscatel which is hake in Muscat sauce, tortillitas de camarone which are shrimp fritters, and señorito riz, a dish of rice with fish and seafood.

Celebrations in Chipiona reflect various ways of life in the town. Some of the main events are: the Romería del Pinar, the pilgrimage of the pine forest, a country fair in May/June; the Procession of the Virgen del Carmen, a marine-themed procession in July; the Carneval de Chipiona, the town fair held in August to announce the grape harvest; the Vigil of Nuestra Senora de Regla, a beach festival with music and local wine happens in September; and every 1st November, the town celebrates coming through the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake relatively unscathed.

Buses are the only public transport in Chipiona, but they run regularly throughout the town as well as to Cadiz and other cities. Taxis are also available.
